Children and technology: new solutions for learning and development
WeDraw is a project born from the research of Monica Gori's group, coordinated by the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in collaboration with the InfoMusLab group of the University of Genoa and funded by the European Union. The main aim of the project was to develop multisensory technologies for learning mathematical and geometric concepts by exploiting other sensory modalities in addition to vision. Two educational games have been developed for teaching three-dimensional shapes (geometry) and fractions (arithmetic) using a haptic system that allows you to maneuver a virtual object. Furthermore, WeDraw has led to the creation of games that exploit the movement of the body in virtual reality, demonstrating the importance of a new pedagogical approach based on the use of active and multisensory learning. Among the technologies designed for this purpose is AudioBrush. This is an audio-tactile tablet, composed of 72 speakers and 576 sensors that record the position of the touches on the device and that allows the simultaneous reproduction of sounds. AudioBrush can also be used by blind children to train some cognitive skills (e.g. attention and memory) or to develop their imagination skills by learning semantic scenarios.

Walter Setti graduated in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Genoa (cum laude), Neuro-engineering curriculum in 2016. His thesis concerned the development of a computational neural network for the reproduction of a specific pattern of cortical activity . After graduating, he began a doctorate at the University of Genoa in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) under the supervision of Monica Gori and Giulio Sandini in the Unit for Visually Impaired People (U-VIP). During his PhD he is working on the development of technologies for the blind, in particular for the study and possible rehabilitation of cognitive abilities (spatial memory and attention).
