The GOCCLES ® medical device in the early detection of oral cancer and dysplasia
Although oral cancer is a common cancer burdened with a high mortality rate, many dentists do not yet use any device for the diagnosis of oral lesions, relying solely on visual inspection, with all its limits. Instead, just few use oral cancer screening devices, somewhat complex and often very expensive - difficulties which seem to explain and justify the low percentages of market penetration of such diagnostic tools. The so high mortality rate is mainly due to the fact that oral cancers are detected very late, when the prognosis is at an advanced stage.
Pierrel Pharma srl and the Catholic University of Rome (Italy) have developed an optical screening device branded as GOCCLES (Glasses for Oral Cancer Curing Light Exposed Screening) which enables the observation of the fluorescence of the healthy mucous when illuminated by a UV light, highlighting suspicious lesions, which will appear as dark areas on a green background.
GOCCLES consists of eyewear, equipped with a special optical filter, to be used in combination with any curing light already available in all dental offices, which allows the dentist to examine the fluorescence generated by healthy cells in the oral cavity compared to non-fluorescent cells tumors in order to identify pre-cancerous dysplastic / anaplastic lesions (carcinomas of the oral mucosa).
